(LosAngeles.CityRegions.Com, November 21, 2013 ) Dothan, AL – Beyond Shelter is a major force behind lifting homeless people out of poverty and providing assistance to those in need in the Los Angeles, California area. This non-profit organization started in 1988 as homelessness increased in LA. Their mission statement today is to “develop systemic approaches to combat poverty and homelessness among families with children, and to enhance family economic security and well-being.”
One method of helping homeless families has centered around a program referred to as Housing First which takes a homeless family and places them as quickly as possible into their own home instead of a shelter or half-way house. After the home is secured and that particular stress is removed, the family is then able to focus on doing what is necessary for them to regain their lives. Beyond Shelter continues to help for six months to a year with jobs assistance, childcare and other needs. The award-winning Housing First program has helped over 4,000 families and has been copied by other groups around the world.
Beyond Shelter’s Employment Services Department maintains a goal of helping people get off and stay off government welfare programs. The department provides job placement support, job listings and computers for people to use while researching jobs. They also provide typing and basic skills tutorials. A case manager and counselor work together to assist the job seeker.
In addition to working with local landlords to provide housing and leases for those being helped, Beyond Shelter has developed at least 4 apartment complexes totaling over 150 units, some in the hardest hit areas of Los Angeles. Central Village, which opened in 2009 also includes over 50,000 square feet of commercial space which is helping to revitalize an entire neighborhood and provide numerous jobs.
Beyond Shelter seeks help from members of the community. Simple things like house-warming gifts can go a long way to showing people that they are still cared about. The organization maintains a gift registry at K-Mart for this purpose (http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/GiftRegistryItemView?sortByItem=category&externalId=900009412110010101&storeId=10151&langId=&catalogId=10104&grUserType=BUYER&fwdURL=GiftRegistryItemfwdView). After purchases are made the items can even be delivered to Beyond Shelter for you so you do not even have to live in the Los Angeles area to be able to help out! During the holidays families can be adopted and a toy drive is also held. Stock, real property and other asset contributions are welcomed. Of course, cash donations also help.
Beyond Shelter can be contacted at its main headquarters at 340 North Madison Avenue in Los Angeles, called at 213-252-0772 or emailed at info@beyondshelter.org. Much more information on how this organization is making a difference in Los Angeles can be obtained on their website at www.beyondshelter.org.
