Pulp Fiction Legends Recognize L. Ron HubbardÂ’s 75th Anniversary Of Typewriter In The Sky

Ron Hubbard's famous published "Typewriter in the Sky" 75 years ago in December 1940 in one of the issues of Unknown Fantasy Fiction. To recognize this monumental literary event, James Sullos, President Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., offers his sincerest congratulations on the diamond anniversary. He made a presentation at the L. Ron Hubbard Library in Hollywood, CA on Tuesday, December 22nd to commemorate this historic event.

Sullos presented a plaque to the John Goodwin, the Galaxy Press President, which read, "Congratulations to L. Ron Hubbard on the 75th anniversary of Typewriter in the Sky. What literary and creative genius to have the featured antagonist modify the author's storyline to become the protagonist. Edgar Rice Burroughs and Mr. Hubbard are pulp fiction legends. "Typerwriter in the Sky" is one of Hubbard's significant works. As part of the book the authors Mike Resnick and Robert J. Sawyer, who wrote "Resnick at Large", state, "Typewriter in the Sky" is an example of what is termed as "Recursive Science Fiction" — a subgenre that is science fiction about science fiction. The work is also listed in "Fantasy: The 100 Best Books," by James Cawthorn and Michael Moorcock. It's additionally listed in "Rivals of the Weird Tales: 30 Great Fantasy and Horror Stories from Weird Fiction Pulps," by Robert E. Weinberg and Stefan R. Dziemianowicz. Martin H. Greenberg writes that "Typewriter in the Sky" should be classed among stories published in Unknown which "still rank as some of the best fantasy produced in this century." The author, David Wingrove, noted in his "The Science Fiction Source Book", "His [Hubbard] best work is outstanding within the pulp tradition: ‘Typewriter in the Sky' is a fine fantasy about a man who gets trapped within a story written by a pulp writer." The authors Farah Mendlesohn and Edward James characterize the work as "The best of Hubbard's stories" and notes that it "is better seen as a rationalized fantasy."
